"Good book with lots of useful info and a great Intro to Geology chapter at the very beginning. However, I bought my copy from a used bookseller--- cheap--- and it is a 1991 reprint. While it looked fine at first it was actually fairly dried out and the binding is very poor; my copy is mostly falling apart. Not blaming the seller or the printer, just suggesting that buyers take extra care in choosing which copy you purchase, that being RECENT reprints--- don't know the year of most recent reprint but don't forget the old adage: you get what you pay for..."

- High level review of basic geological events and components of many different sections of Arizona. If you're looking for high level (1-2 pages per section of the state) info, this is fine - accurate and interesting. If you're looking for anything more than a brief summary, like specific types of mineral deposits, rock formations, or site of interest, this book doesn't deliver on any of that.
- Used it going from Tucson to Sedona, Flagstaff and then the Grand Canyon. My hobby has always been geology so I'm used to more academic geology text books but this had plenty of information as we drove/stopped/drove, etc. I wasn't disappointed in the least and it is perfect for someone who is interested in knowing how and why the terrain they are driving across began. I'm fascinated by structural geology so I did end up purchasing a textbook at the Grand Canyon and I will have both of these with me on my next trip. A note ... I bought this from the Tucson Goodwill and I always try to do that because I've yet to be disappointed by a Goodwill book. This book had no wear and was in perfect condition (as usual). It lovingly has highlights and my annotations now but I plan to keep it as a reference and I didn't want to miss my impressions. Good job Goodwill.
- Wherever I go, I always have a roadside geology book by my side. Living in Arizona, there is so much of interest from a geological point of view. All you have to do is drive, and when you see something of interest, either have your friend read to you from the book, or just pull over and do a little digging.
The organization of material is really excellent and will help even the novice geologist.
Section one covers the simple, basic introductory geology information. Next, it breaks down the three provinces that make up Arizona. What is great is the book covers various geology that you can see while traveling Arizona highways.
This is really a fun book. - I have these for many states and and one for the Baja. I have loved them and learned so much.

- This book has not been updated since the 1980s. Highway numbers have changed, freeways completed, and it devotes a lot of time to water issues that have changed considerably in the last 35 years. Book is almost obsolete.
- In ROADSIDE GEOLOGY OF ARIZONA, Halka Chronic relates the story of Arizona's geology, which varies considerably from North to South. In the Basin & Range area, where I live, collisions between vast tectonic plates built mountains that rivaled the Sierras before they were worn down by millions of years of wind,water, and unrelenting sun. In the Phoenix area, I have hiked through the roots of those ancient mountains, metamorphic rocks that have been crushed, pushed and pulled into new forms and wild shapes. All my life I've wondered about them what they are, how old they are, why they're here. Halka Chronic answers those questions.
I used to just gaze out the window and wonder about roadside geology when I was on a trip. Now I consult the Roadside Geology series. I can't help it! I'm a Geology nerd. Make that HAPPY geology nerd. This book is highly recommended. - I made the scenery along the road trips between Pheonix and Flagstaff and our return to Pheonix much more interesting and added another layer to the beautiful scenery.
It is well written and an interesting compromise between a layman and a professional's requirements.
