Thunderstruck Alie Summers Randall Andrews Karen Brosinsky 9781946675415 Books Reviews

  • I’m a huge fan of dystopian fiction, particularly YA/NA. Thunderstruck did not disappoint. I read it in one day - I simply couldn’t put it down. The main character, Arlo, is stunningly complex. The supporting characters are also well-developed. Summers weaves a complex and incredibly beautiful web of character, world, and plot development in this debut novel. I’m anxiously awaiting the release of book 2.
  • It’s been a long time since I haven’t been able to put a book down and I devoured this book in one day! The story was good on so many levels it pulled me in and left me wanting more! Can’t wait to read more by Alie Summers!
  • This book is absolutely fantastic! Summers weaves truths and modern problems set in a futuristic dystopian society. Arlo is both a strong and sensitive character who is excellently fleshed out and the supporting characters are so realistic it's hard to pick your favorite (Okay, mine is definitely Marta). The plot keeps you hooked until the very last page, too. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series!
  • My perspective Arlo is just like us. At least those like me. You are content in the way life is, as you've always known it to be. You don't desire change. You are content to simply let life happen to you.
But then you are hit by a force you've never encountered before. Something that alters the world as you know it, forever. Your eyes are opened to the vast complexities and wonder around you. You begin to understand why you are here, you have a purpose. You also have a decision. Do I continue to allow life to happen to me? Or do I change? Do I take action?
This author takes us into Arlo's world that is turned completely on its axis and we are left at the end exasperated we have to wait for the next installation.
I'll be drumming my fingers impatiently waiting for the next book!

  • My favorite thing about this story line is that the main character is neurodivergent and wonderfully portrayed. I think a lot of kids (and adults) will be able to see their own struggles reflected in a main character for the first time, and others will see things from an interesting and unusual perspective. The book is fast paced and hard to put down, I'm excited for the next one! (I also purchased directly from the author's site, so while I don't have a 'verified' stickie, I did buy the book)
  • I absolutely loved this. It took me a few chapters to get a good picture of the world that was being built and by that time I had started to fall in love with the characters. A dystopian world seen through the eyes of a person who becomes part of the Deaf community? Yes, please! I found myself wondering about what Arlo would do next throughput my day. Also, the use of imagery with the idea of being ‘Thunderstruck’ woven throughout is beautiful.
  • I purchased my copy directly from the authors website. This was a very fun read for me. The main characters felt well fleshed out, with complex motives and feelings. I was genuinely left wanting to read more of the story, while feeling that this piece ended where it needed to. It's an excellent introduction to a world I hope to go back to.
  • I really enjoyed this book! Arlo is a fascinating protagonist, and he lives in an equally fascinating world. The book investigates how its dystopian society exploits underprivileged and special needs individuals (a concept that is particularly relevant to the world we currently live in). The various characters that Arlo encounters on his adventure are interesting and complex, with their own agendas and points of view. The pace is staccato-fast, which kept the pages turning. I appreciate a story that explores the gray areas in between the black and white moral choices, and this story didn't disappoint. The first book in a series, Thunderstruck only scratches at the surface of its larger world, with plenty of opportunity to broaden its scope and exploration. I'm excited to see how the series progresses in the next book!
