- For me, this is an absolutely amazing book. The author has done extensive research and instead of answering the 5 W's that a reader is accustomed to in books, she has taken these a step more....She has answered 2 W's (Who and Where) and also 2 H's (How they got there and How We Know). Amazing....just amazing...
A most engaging and educational read which I always enjoy ...getting older, I appreciate anytime I can further my education. In addition to the mysteries, this one also contains the culture, anthropology, the histroy and more...much more.
Just the remoteness and the settling of these islands in the Pacific is indeed mind-boggling. Add to that remoteness, the idea of how these early inhabitants arrived there, and one realizes there is indeed a mystery...Not to worry, this author will thrill you with her findings.
There are photos and maps at the end which I enjoyed thoroughly. Am glad that I purchased this book as some time in the future, I will read it again. Such an excellent read for me and was not able to absorb all that I should have in my initial read.
Most highly recommended. - A brief history of the Polynesian people and their early interactions with Europeans, followed by an extensive discussion of how they might have sailed from island to island. Birds and butterflies sail our atmosphere by riding currents of air that they can perceive -- but that are mysterious to us earthbound creatures. In a similar manner, the island people of the Pacific grow up with the sea and can read information embedded in its expanses -- information denied to us land-bound creatures. How did they do it? How did they successfully travel expanses of hundreds of miles just by reading the ocean and the air? This science-based book doesn't have all the answers, but it does help us understand how it was possible. A concise and not overly esoteric read, authoritative as well.
- Fascinating story of a civilization separate from the old world. A civilization that accomplished great things on their own, much like the story of the the mesoamerican civilizations. Without a compass or sextant or charts of any kind these people learned how to navigate the entire pacific and populate all the pacific islands. This book unravels the mystery of how it was done. I found myself having to constantly refer to a map of the pacific as I read. It might be a good idea to print one out before u start reading.

- A wonderful book that follows European “learning†about the Polynesian settlement of the Pacific Ocean. The perspective is helpful, because it gives readers an understanding of the science and technologies involved, and an emotional interest in the revival of Polynesian culture. The revival, because of all that was lost or destroyed, necessarily relies on science and technology.

- Thanks, Christina Thompson. Now I have a list of other books to read so I can understand even more! My first reaction to the photo section was frustration that they hadn't been in the text, but in retrospect, it was a nice surprise at the end.
- Polynesians' seafaring exploits have fascinated me for several years. This book is a good introduction. I wish the book had more from Polynesians themselves. My biggest complaint is the small number of maps. In every chapter I wanted to see more of the geographic relationships of the islands and oceans being discussed.

- In a world where the intellectual class nearly uniformly despises Donald Trump, the celebrated historian Victor Davis Hanson has arrived to offer a clear-eyed evaluation of how Trump became President, and what that may mean for the immediate future. This is not a propagandistic defense of Trump, but an analysis of his campaign and his Presidency so far, viewed from atop the shifting sands of America’s political landscape. I doubt if this book will make Hanson popular with liberals. Nor will it make him popular with the #NeverTrumpers, but I’m also pretty sure he’s left them behind already, for the same reasons that voters left them behind—all of which Hanson outlines in this book.
The first part of the book covers the split of America into the coastal elites, who have the power and the money, and the despised denizens of flyover country, who have neither power nor money. This is fairly well-trodden ground, most recently (with variations) by Tucker Carlson in "Ship of Fools." Trump’s candidacy was initially treated as a joke (I literally laughed when I heard it, myself), but the elites put up the very worst candidate possible, both in the abstract and for the immediate purpose, and Trump showed the deplorables he was willing and able to fight for them (whether that has come to pass is irrelevant for the question of his election, of course). None of this analysis is all that original, but it is well-written and interesting.
The second part of the book covers the reaction to Trump of the existing structures of governmental power, who (no surprise) are closely tied to the coastal elites—what Hanson cleverly calls the ancien régime. Trump, like everyone else, had no idea of the lengths to which this group, the Deep State, would go to reverse the results of the election, a process through which we are still living. Justice is, of course, irrelevant—the goal is to get Trump, however they can. So far, they’ve come up empty, and Trump is laughing at them, as at his two-hour speech last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
The question, of course, is who will have the last laugh. I’m putting my money on Trump, because I suspect that his enemies have already shot their bolt, and their reach has exceeded their grasp. Absent some economic disaster, Trump is going to be re-elected, and keep remaking the country to some extent. True, that’s not a great enough extent, but it’s a lot more than any other Republican would have done. So far, he’s been a huge success, by any objective measure, if not everything I wanted, or that those who elected him wanted. He just needs to stay the course, and, fortunately, there is every indication that is exactly what he is going to do. - VDH is an erudite and calm objective historian and narrator of times past and current. History is not what anyone wishes that would have happened. History is what happened, and happens, like it or not. Too many of our claimed "historians" are propagandists, not historians. VDH is a historian of wars and culture, of life and of people.
"Ancien régime", aka, our current Ship of Tools, or, your arrogant 'superior' 'intelligentsia', or, they have learned nothing at all since 2016 and consider you all to be ignorant naive hicks. You sustain their high perches. You have the power to poke holes into their nests, while they sit high up and snicker at you, but they are so few.
Deplorables, you are the many and you have the power to vote against them. Exercise all your rights. You are free and powerful. They are just a handful of bitter losing fools. They have and want to destroy the Middle Class of the USA, which is a travesty for the country and the world.

Hanson, but also read everyone who opposes him, to determine the difference on your own, most especially how that affects your very own life and that of your family, your loved ones, your milieu. - The renowned historian Victor Davis Hanson once again delivers a piercing review, this time of a current president beset on all sides. Hanson thoroughly explains the historical context which brought Trump to office & why his presidency was necessary to unseat the old established order. The coastal elitist have become so detached from 'Americanism' that they still can not grasp how Trump is president & they likely never will. "America first" in an age of borderless nihilism. Must read for those who wish to understand why Trump is needed, now more than ever. Victor Davis Hanson is a national treasure for risking the backlash that this book will inevitably receive from the establishment.
- This is fantastic insight from a brilliant man. If I had my choice of dream dinner guests #1 would be Mark Steyn and #2 would be Dr. Hanson. VDH is a gift from God and I will cherish his written words till my dying day. Also, the opposition to Trump is extremely misguided and false and the facts laid out in this book prove it. If you care about facts above feelings please read this book.

- This is a fair-minded book, let me stress, very well worth a read. But it is by fair-minded academics. It makes the case for National Populism in academic terms, on the plausible premise that NP is not modern fascism but an alternative form of democratic politics.
There is no reason to accept that premise, nor do I not find that case made, as the authors assert it would be, by the time I finished reading. One would need to write a book oneself fully to explain why, but two general points might set the ball rolling.
Leave aside the familiar point that ‘modern’ fascism would hardly adopt the style of past fascisms as this perennial tendency resurfaces in the 21st century. Fundamentally, there is no reason to accept the authors’ crucial contention that populism is a ‘thin’ ideology. Populism is better viewed as what it always was a method. On this, the book though giving examples of NP rhetoric, then passes on and over that rhetoric with a ‘however’ or a ‘but’ or inverted commas round the obvious objection to it. Yet its rhetoric is the violent heart of fascism, forever beckoning like the heartless Leaders who make this cruel politics chillingly their own. - The succinct summary of Paul Whelan above is as good a review of this book in the shortest amount of space as it is going to get. However, I feel he was too fair and generous in his rating so I have taken it down a little.
The authors point out that national populism is not a new phenomenon. They state that its rise is a response to the spread of liberal democracy. This is a tautology. The issues and emotions underlying national populism (adjusted to its time) have been around a lot longer than that but outside a democracy they are known as uprisings, revolts or revolutions (think Rome, Chartists, Lenin, Castro). The authors choose the US People's Party as their example, I think the only one cited, of a national populist movement. But that is a historical aberration as far as such movements are concerned. They had a platform of improvements they wanted to enact graduated income tax, shorter workweek, direct election of Senators. They were "for" something rather than "against"; and they were competing within the electoral structure.
In attempting to legitimize today's national populism as a benign movement, the authors do not examine whether those the authors identify as populists have formed their (subjective) views or have been goaded there. Of course everyone's view in a democracy - subjective or not - is valid. However, the national populist movements have been haunted throughout history by their connection with demagogues (think Hitler, Mussolini, Peron, Chaves). Unfortunately that combination usually leads to a result where the people's problems are not only not solved but everyone winds up worse, sometimes much, much worse.
So the question unanswered in this book is whether the current populist movement in the US is more akin to the People's Party of the 1890's or movements which were prone to high-jacking by demagogues which can lead to anti-democratic movements. The current movement in the US is not close to the latter, yet. However, the authors' blindness to that possibility is what makes this book incomplete.

- I believe this book saved my life. I'm not prone to melodrama, or to such excessively long reviews, but this is true, and so important to me, I have to say it. I've been working for years in an extremely busy law office. It's been growing harder and harder throughout the years for me to handle this job. Two months ago my boss fired my coworker, and I've since had to take on two people's work plus train multiple new people (as the first two didn't stay), all with constant, all day long interruptions, high-intensity demands, and a high level of multitasking. This has happened many times before, and while it was dreadful, I managed, but for some reason this time I just couldn't handle it. My entire life has been on hold since this started, I get home from work too exhausted to do anything except veg out for a couple hours and go to bed, and even weekends aren't much better. I was taking terrible care of myself and my life was falling apart. I did, in fact, feel like I was killing myself with this lifestyle, but I simply did not have the energy to fix any of it, or for that matter have any idea how to fix it.
I blamed myself - there must be something `wrong with me' because I can't handle the job. I wanted to leave, but thought, if I can't handle this job, how am I going to handle a new job? It'll probably be more of the same. I thought I was just getting soft because I was getting older (I'm in my late 40s).
I've always known I was introverted, but I didn't realize just what all that entailed - I thought it mostly meant `shy' or that I didn't like social settings.
This book taught me more about myself than I've ever known. It read like my biography. Almost every page had a new insight into why I think and feel the way I do. Throughout the book I saw my very own self described in new and empowering ways.
I learned that the job situation I'm currently in - the non-stop deadline demands, interruptions, never being able to work quietly or alone no matter how difficult a project was, phones ringing incessantly, people in my face all day long, etc. - especially when it's work that I actually don't care anything about personally - those are the exact circumstances that trip every one of a strong introvert's triggers. And I was subjecting myself to it 40 hours a week, for months.
It's no wonder I was so miserable and completely exhausted all the time. And as enlightening as it was to learn how many of the traits I've beat myself up for over the years are just a product of my introverted temperament (being highly sensitive, shutting down when subjected to stimulation overload, preferring to think a thing through before I speak - something I never get to do at work, as if it takes me more than 5 seconds to say something, I get interrupted and cut off), the most important thing I got from this book is that it's okay to be myself, it's okay to feel the way I do. There is not something `wrong with me' that I have to `fix.' I am not weak or a failure because I don't feel or behave like my extremely extroverted boss (who thrives in high-energy crisis mode, and is bored unless he's doing 10 things at once - and expects the rest of us to keep up).
And far from it being an age-related `going soft,' what's probably in fact going on is that as I get older, it is becoming increasingly vital to me to be truer to myself.
I also found the information on the history of the "rise of the Culture of Personality" completely fascinating, it really gave me a new insight as to just exactly how we 'grew' this tendency to value extroversion over introversion. It makes so much more sense now.
This book gave me the courage I needed to start taking the steps to fix my work situation. Not only the courage, but the `permission' and the understanding - because I now know there isn't something wrong with me, but instead this is what I need to do to be my best self, and stop killing myself with stress. That I probably can find a place of value in the world by being myself, not trying to force myself to be something I'm not. I know I will meet resistance from my boss (I'd love for him to read this book, but unfortunately I know he won't), and I know I won't instantly fix everything in one day, and that I'll probably always need to be able to stretch myself a bit to do things that are not ideal for me ... but this book taught me that there are ways to make that work, too, if you understand and honor the need for recharging around such tasks, instead of trying to force yourself to do them 8 hours a day with no break. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, in either direction. Basically, I'm not out of the woods yet, but I now see the path out, and I have hope.
I think every introvert should read this book, because it will help you understand why you are who you are, and why that's a beautiful thing, not a character flaw. And I think everyone who knows an introvert should read this book, and quit trying to "fix us."
Which means pretty much the entire country (or world) should read this book. The wealth of information and insights in this book cannot be overstated - especially if you are an introverted type of person who has always felt there was something not quite right about you, or that you somehow needed to change to fit in or succeed. This book will give you back yourself, and in my case, my life. Thank you, Susan Cain, from the bottom of my heart (which is finally beating at a more normal speed because I'm not panicked about going to work for the first time in months).
Edited 11-13-14 It worked! I'm now working half-days at the office and half-days at home, and in a few weeks will transition to working from home full time. I never imagined that could happen. It's amazing what becomes possible when you finally realize you deserve what you already knew you needed. - I want to express gratitude to Ms. Cain for she has made it officially OK to be me. All my life, I've had this intangible feeling of being ‘wrong’ or ‘flawed’, or at the very least a minority in every walk of life. Only after my brother recommended this book to me do I finally feel worthy and acceptable (even, dare I say, valuable) for being an introspective person who thinks before speaking or taking action. I am not ‘weird’ or ‘shy’ or ‘anti-social’ as I have been labeled since childhood.
Please forgive me for being too upfront or dramatic, but to put things in perspective I have made repeated attempts on my own life over the last 20 years and, not surprisingly, been plagued by severe, chronic, and recurrent depression and anxiety since early childhood. I believe this book has been a major turning point for me. No longer do I see myself as ‘broken’, ‘sick’, or ’hopeless’, but just an introvert in an extrovert's world. Since reading it, my mental health has improved drastically. And while I'll always have the tendency to be hard on myself, this book and its insights have allowed me to grant myself some compassion and room to breathe. Now I see my biggest ailment all along has been trying to fit into patterns of behavior which were fundamentally against my nature.
A prime example from my life I called myself weak if I had trouble working 50+ hours a week the way my peers seemed to do without problem. Then, just to meet expectations, I would force myself to go out after work with the same coworkers I had just spent all day around when what I truly wanted was time alone in order to decompress. What happened over and over again is I would push myself until I developed migraines or other physical symptoms. I ignored my body's signals, believed it was possible to deny my needs, and thought that pushing through the pain would be rewarded. No wonder I was so unhappy. If I feel like this, I know there must be others who do too.
The research cited in this book show there are clear neurological differences in the way introverted brains process sensory information. Those findings told me that I truly am hard-wired this way. If the way I take in the world cannot ever be changed, then it's up to me to find the grace to say “This is just the way I am.â€
Today I realize I cannot change who I am at the core, but I can learn to love myself. It is also my duty to navigate through life in ways that are sustainable and healthy for me, and to disregard the ‘shoulds’ which were making me ill. We of this personality type can not only improve our own existences, but also possess the ability to make the world better and more well-rounded. Indeed, society can benefit from our unique perspective if it would only take the time to listen to our carefully-formulated and often soft-spoken contributions.
So far I don't yet have a success story of how I have used this knowledge of myself to bring me from rags to riches. But I have moved away from traditional employment to more freelance work and flexible telecommuting positions. I hope that armed with this newfound self-acceptance I will eventually be able to make my introversion work for me, rather than pressuring myself to 'succeed' in spite of this trait. I guess I need to change my definition of success from financial wealth and externally recognized achievements, to one that centers around my internal balance and contentment day-to-day. I’m still a work in progress.
For now, I try to do my part by reaching out to fellow introverts, recommending this book, and letting them know I find them beautiful just the way they are. And I make sure to plan alone time into my days and activities in order to maintain my mental stability.
My wish for everyone who feels like an outsider is to read this book. Chances are you're just an introvert and either don't know it, or have been taught that extroversion is the only way. Once you become comfortable with yourself, the world and its possibilities will open up. Please read this book. - Most of my friends see me as an extrovert (or, what the literature calls an extravert). I'm not. Instead, I'm a deeply introverted individual. True, I worked hard to become a learned extrovert (the happiest people on the planet, by the way). Ironically, I worked way too hard, especially from 2003 to 2008. Eventually, it became extremely hard for me to be quiet around others. No wonder most of my friends say there's no way I could be a deeply introverted individual. In the opening chapters of her acclaimed book, QUIET, Susan Cain "proves" my secret identity is my real identity. If only she would write a new book helping jabberwockies like me learn how to be quiet around others, again. In the meantime, if you haven't read QUIET, please do. You'll benefit. Your family will benefit. Your friends and colleagues will benefit. Highly recommended!
