"Pros: First, Liked the art style, story intriguing, pulls you in without too much backstory to bog it down, just enough. Well paced.
Cons: Format is too small for a 17in laptop screen. Should try larger pictures and fonts with a mobile framing like many web comics use. Biggest problem, not a show stopper but always a killer for fantasy, historic, and even sci fi stories. The characters talk like middle class Americans from today. People in a different world, different time, different technology, different language, different race/species should speak differently. Can't fault it too much though because that is one of the hardest aspects of these kinds of stories to write."

- Pros First, Liked the art style, story intriguing, pulls you in without too much backstory to bog it down, just enough. Well paced.
Cons Format is too small for a 17in laptop screen. Can't fault it too much though because that is one of the hardest aspects of these kinds of stories to write. - While a bit short for the price, it was absolutely worth it. I was captivated by how such few words and drawings could so thoroughly capture the characters, without stepping on the original cast's toes, so to speak, because it felt like I was viewing Vax, Vex, and Keyleth on their own for the first time, instead of seeing them through the lens of their players. If possible, this critter of two years fell in love with this cast and this world more than she already had. Every character and background is expressive, beautifully professional, and written as if the cast themselves had dictated the lines.
So a huge, huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard and took a lot of risks making these. You all did fantastic. I'm waiting with baited breath to see the next ones and buy the physical copies when they come out. - I've been a fan of Vox Machina from Critical Role for quite some time and was super excited to see them get their own graphic novel. It doesn't disappoint! The art is beautiful and captures the characters perfectly. The story is equal parts breathtaking, funny, and action packed. Also, little spoiler here, who doesn't love it when a character gets unexpectedly attacked by a shark in a swamp! I totally recommend this for fans of the show and non-fans as well. You don't need to see Critical Role or know anything about it to enjoy this story of twin half elves trying to solve a mystery and you should snatch it up and enjoy it.
- Vox Machina Origins is a story set in the Dungeons and Dragons style world of Tal'dorei, following the adventures of a group of "mercenaries", who meet by means of a dangerous plot to rid the small town of Stilben of its inhabitants. The story opens with Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia, twin half elves with a penchant for mischief. On the trail of an epidemic level of stillborn children, the duo find themselves hired to investigate the situation by a man who lost his own children and wife to the so called curse. They've come to investigate the nearby swamp where they are ambushed by a particularly ugly and hostile fish person who, of course, dies, but manages to wound Vax. When suddenly, a young and quirky red headed half-elf shows up and heals Vax of his injuries. They discover that she, too, is on her own investigation of the stillborn children and her new insights lead the twins to believe that there is so much more to this than a simple curse.
This first issue is something I would recommend to anybody, whether fans of Critical Role or even if you've never heard of Critical Role. I myself being a long time fan of the show! Exciting action, witty dialogue and beautiful artwork, this will not disappoint! Can't wait for the rest! - I love critical role so so much and an origin comic for the show is exactly what I was craving! As the campaign is nearing its end on twitch, I think this will help soften the blow of moving on from these fantastic characters. Even if you don't play d&d or watch the show, you should give this comic a chance - I can promise you now that if you love fantasy and great characters, you will love Vox Machina origins. Cannot wait until all the issues are collected and I can buy it in print!
- I have been a fan of critical role for almost the entire run of the show. That is to say, that I have loved this show obsessively like any other good Critter should! I expected greatness from Matt Colville, because it's Matt Colville and he's an awesome Storyteller. He gets paid to tell stories in fantasy world! However the Slow Burn of this comic truly captures the love that is critical role fandom! I wanted more but I got exactly what was necessary. I know who Vex and Vax are now. It's just perfect! So well done, I can't wait for book 2! Hurry up, give it to me now!
- As a fan of the online show, I have come to know and love the characters as I know so many others have. When I heard that a comic would be coming out about Vox Machina's pre-stream antics, I was excited, but weary. The book, and also apparently the rest of the series, takes place even pre-home game (meaning that creative liberties could be taken without ruining lore, or backstory, or canon, or whichever word you wish to use here) and yet embodies the characters wonderfully! The dialogue, and mannerisms presented within are spot on for the actors' portrayals of their characters, and how they described them being pre-stream. I really enjoyed the setup to this adventure, as well as the fantastic art and writing, and look forward to the rest of the series to come.
