The Second Half of Life Opening the Eight Gates of Wisdom Angeles Arrien 0600835113083 Books Reviews

  • Title caught my eye. I am the age when you think about these things and are looking for answers. I read the book very slowly so I could understand what she was saying. I have been questioning a lot of things lately but I have now learned that I am pretty normal. Thank you so very much.
  • I took an online class using this book and I learned much from accepting this process of bringing together all the different yet completely related stages of my life. I am glad I bought a hard copy. At 66 years old it is lovely to see the fair young maiden alive and well within me coming out to pick roses, as well as the seasoned wise women navigating husband, family and friends with acceptance and love. If this truly is the second half I am loving the process and my spiritual connection to God. Wish I had known then what I know now but then I would not be where I am would I??
  • "The Second Half of Life" can be used for those of us in the iffy third, or even quarter tiny bit of life. I don't know if I have 10 or 20 years left of activity, or time to change my external options. But Angeles also encourages the reader to consider inward change, picking up old ideas and running with them. Or, perhaps, to drop the mask and go through new gates, embracing aging as a time for calming down. Too often we think of goal setting as a call to wild and crazy. I'm reconsidering, and believe it might be to embrace contemplative but just as crazy options.

I give this as a gift for 2nd marriages, 50/60+ birthday gifts, and people facing the changes brought by grief, loss, and retirement. As a therapist and author, I encourage the belief that we can draw wisdom from wise sources.Embracing True Prosperity Guided Visualizations & Practical Tools To Realize Your Deepest Dreams

The Courage to Trust A Guide to Building Deep and Lasting Relationships
  • A wonderful read for those considering how to approach the second portion of their lives as they mature. The author looks at life as a legacy, which it should be, and how to review the importance of one's life - and to continue to grow spiritually. When it comes time to be a mentor to others, this book will give you easy to follow steps to deepen relationships and purpose. You'll fee wiser and ready to increase your significance to self and others.
  • I'll read anything written by Angeles Arrien—she is one of my most profound and appreciated wisdom teachers. This book is a must for anyone over 50. I love her knowledge, understanding and passion for sharing what she knows about ways each one of us can help to bring peace to our world by first bringing it "home" into our minds, hearts and souls.
  • A gem for those in the midlife and beyond journey as well as those journeying with them. The book shares insightful cognitive maps on the struggles and gifts at different stages of the journey in a language that's both poetic and mythological.
  • Great person with excellent teaching stories. I have attended her seminars also. Her work stays with you. You won't be sorry you listened.
  • I am almost through second half of life at 88. My two daughters are starting at 55 and 57. I thought it was valuable enough to have them read it. I have it on my kindle and gave the hard copy to the girls. jean

Force of Nature edition by SL Scott Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • FORCE OF NATURE is the third book of the Everest Brothers. I enjoyed Ethan and Hutton's stories. Now time for Bennett Everest's story. And what a story it is! Bennett is ready to close a business deal, when an ultimatum is made by a grieving father. He hasn't heard from his only daughter who is now in Paris. If Bennett will just go bring her home, the deal will be sealed. Bennett is sure this will be so easy to bring the missing daughter (Winter Nobleman) home. It should be easy Get in. Get the girl. Get out! Soon he is to learn it was anything, but easy!

His plans do not go as expected. He meets her, but she is not receptive to his advances or charm. The more he thinks about it, and how he hadn't told her who he is or why he was there, It will change tomorrow when he exposes the truth. That is if he even gets to see her again. “If Wishes come true and fate has it's way.”

Bennett doesn't know if he believes in love at first sight. But seeing Winter is the closest he has ever been. He is not sure where they are headed in their relationship. But, “It means I give you my heart, and you give me yours.” She curls into him, molding herself to his body wanting to sink into his arms. Yet, there is so much standing in their way. There is no point regretting what they couldn't change. Acknowledge the problem. Address it. Solve it. Survive it. He was a force of nature. She was a force to be reckoned with.

Nothing is as it seems. Problems & enemies are everywhere. Twist and turns, but will love be enough! Bennett was the hero of her very own fairy tale. And Winter was the queen of his. But would it be enough for the Happy Ever After??
  • A Romance Suspense that will captivate your heart!
Bennett and Winters story has been beautifully written. Captivating and creative S.L. Scott has once again got my heart racing and made me weak at the knees all at the same time.
Bennett is the youngest of the Everest Brothers and is just as Swoon worthy if not more so than his brothers. Winter Nobleman is the fiesty and defiant heroine and together they make this story one of the best I’ve read to date.
Force Of Nature is exactly as the the title reads. Suspense, intrigue and a love story for the true romantics that you will not be able to put down.
  • Force of Nature is a fantastic read. You'll want to hang onto your seats for this rollercoaster of a ride. If you met Ethan and Hutton Everest then you are familiar with the brothers and know who Bennett is. If you haven't you need to. These brothers are all so swoon worthy in their own ways. Well Force of Nature is Bennett's turn and you will not be disappointed when it comes down to how he falls for Winter. Now I love how Winter is a bit of a mystery throughout this one. Winter is a survivor and one strong cookie. She is a fighter. As you read you understand more and more about Winter and Bennett's fight to be together. I love how Bennett never gives up on Winter. You feel his love for her from the beginning. They are so sweet together. I love how everyone in the Everest family just embraces Winter into the fold even with the danger that surrounds her. S.L. Scott does it again with this one. She gives you a strong story that steals bits and pieces of your heart. She makes you fall in love with her fantastic characters and makes you feel as if you are apart of the story. I love Force of Nature and the Everest family so much. Go one click this one and hang on tight. You are going to enjoy the ride that is Bennett and Winter.
  • 5 AMAZING STARS!! This book was amazing!! I was glued to Winter and Bennett's love story with all the drama. Their love story has all the feels with lots of suspense that keeps you turning pages. This author know how to write phenomenal stories that keep you 1-Click on each book she writes. I highly recommend this book.
  • I had been dying to get my hands on this book. You first meet Bennett in his brother’s story, however this is a complete stand alone. For weeks S.L. Scott has been sharing little snippets of the book and the most swoon worthy photos which she said were inspiration for Bennett’s character. And she wasn’t wrong, this story was everything you could image, it was romantic, sexy and the banner between them is awesome. But there is also suspense which is one thing I love in a story. You are really hooked from the very first page right up until it ends. You just can’t go wrong with S.L. Scott’s books.

"Margaret L. King has put together a highly representative selection of readings from most of the more significant—but by no means the most obvious—texts by the authors who made up the movement we have come to call the 'Enlightenment.' They range across much of Europe and the Americas, and from the early seventeenth century until the end of the eighteenth. In the originality of the choice of texts, in its range and depth, this collection offers both wide coverage and striking insights into the intellectual transformation which has done more than any other to shape the world in which we live today. It is simply the best introduction to the subject now available."
—Anthony Pagden, UCLA, and author of The Enlightenment and Why It Still Matters

Blueprint The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society edition by Nicholas A Christakis Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

  • With lucid prose and wide-ranging knowledge on the human sciences, this book is a must-read for anyone who is curious about the origins of social groups and societies, as well as the common bonds that Christakis called "the social suite." This book is not only brilliant in its conception, but also sweeping in its scope. But most importantly, Christakis highlights our shared humanity that lies deep within the evolutionary process over centuries, despite our cultural and social differences. This unifying message is both timely and urgent, especially in this historical moment of great divisions and disparities in the United States and beyond.
  • There are thousands of academic writings that address the question, "Are humans fundamentally good?" Scholars will likely never reach consensus on an answer, just as the general population will likely never reach consensus on an answer. But Nicholas Christakis makes a scientifically-supported, passionate argument that we are wired to be decent, to work together, to not hate each other. And, to the extent that that belief can become a self fulfilling prophecy, I'm inclined to join him in it. This is a smart, timely book written by a scholar who has demonstrated that HE is a truly decent human. It is, in my opinion, his masterpiece.
  • This book made me think about and reconsider the question is human nature fundamentally selfish or altruistic, questions about nature vs. nurture, and the idea of emergent properties. I appreciated how the new ideas presented were backed up with plenty of supporting evidence from prior observational and research studies. I thought the author did a great job narrating.
  • The book is filled with examples, graphs, images, and explanations that help the reader understand more deeply. On top of this, the style is engaging making it easier to read and even fun.
  • another great book by Christakis. If you read and loved Connected as I did, you'll find this book just as insightful and entertaining. Loved the section on shipwrecks. I've met the author in person and he's one of the smartest people I've ever spoken to.
  • Great subject .... Well written.
    Academic in structure..
  • A rewarding and edifying read for those who are interested in genetics and the evolution of homo sapiens. The author picks up where Darwin left off and expands our understanding of the biological origins of social behavior and culture.
  • Listened to the audiobook, but just bought the paper version. This is one of 2019's bumper crop of books by late career pioneers in the evolution, ethology, and psychology of distinctly human forms of social interaction (Michael Tomasello, Becoming Human; Richard Wrangham, The Goodness Paradox; Frans de Waal, Mama's Last Hug; and EO Wilson, Genesis). Each is touching one part of the elephant, sometimes overlapping parts,. Each has a deep research base well situated in an interdisciplinary knowledge space, which is what you need to begin to grasp something as complex as human social behavior. What this book brings to the party is an extremely sophisticated analysis of how individual genetics can influence large scale social organization, and an exploration of the different evolutionary paths for different types of social interaction. Also, ingenious data sets, for example shipwreck survivors and their fates on isolated/foreign shores. Your time and attention in reading this book will not go unrewarded.
